Malachi O'Connor sat alone at the library behind a stack of books. His nose was hidden in one at that moment doing what his brother called 'Hidding in his books', what his sister called 'Being borring', but what he called 'being smart.' Those who can read but choose not to have no advantage over those who cannot read, he'd always thought. It was a famous quote by a muggle author named Mark Twain, but he could never quite remember exactly how it went.
The fifteen-year-old's eyes traveled across the page, taking in the information there like a sponge takes in water. Popping a bertie-botts every flavor bean into his mouth, the self-proclaimed book worm finally set aside the novel, stretching and looking around for a familiar, or semi-familiar, face to talk to.
It was getting late, already 8:30, he realized when he glanced at his watch. He'd missed dinner. I suppose that's what I get for loosing track of time again, he scolded himself.

Heading back to the Ravenclaw common room Liz found her feet dragging there instead of willingly going. Sometimes that place could get a little lonely and she hated being up there but it would all be alright soon. Fifth year only meant that two years of school were left and then she would be out of there. She could hardly wait, but still she could hardly understand why she wanted to be out of the common room so badly.
To avoid going back to that place she trailed along the fourth floor a little longer before turning and going into the library. It was almost like her sanctuary and the only place she felt she fit in at Hogwarts. She wasn't a Slytherin like her sisters and she wasn't a "typical" Ravenclaw so where did she belong? An outsider to both sides of her she had to often struggle just to show that she did belong amongst them. Her grades sure did come up perfectly but everything else didn't, it was annoying.
Silently walking into the library Liz took out her charms book from the bag she had permanently attached to her side. Since she was currently avoiding the common room and had nothing better to do she supposed her best bet was to crack down on the books and get studying. They had final examinations like they did every year and OWLs the following year so it was best to get on it now. In the library she passed by someone she barely recognized as another from her house. Like everyone else she had never really spoken to him but seen him around once or twice. She found a place on her own in the back of the library, away from everyone else...that was the way she liked it.

Malachi glanced back up from his watch just as a Ravenclaw girl passed his table. She barely glanced at him on the way to the back tables, but she didn't have to, she already had his full attention. The girl was beautiful. He watched her as she swung her bag off her shoulder and placed it on the table. Quickly, the fifth year faced forward, not wanting to seem like he was really staring too much, as hard as that was. There had to be some way to get to talking to her! Looking to the floor where the girl had walked by, Malachi saw a purple quill lying there. He didn't know if it was hers, he hadn't heard it drop, but it gave him a good idea.
Reaching down, he picked it up, careful not to fall out of his chair and stared at it for a second. Then Malachi stood and glanced at the girl, approaching her in the most casual way he could. "I'm sorry, but is this yours?" he asked, truly curious. After all, even if it wasn't he'd said something to her.
